Burning of the Socks Event Kicks Off Season

Safe Harbor Harbors View Marina is gearing up for a very busy summer. The Duck Creek marina kicks off its season Saturday, May 4, with its annual “back-to-summertime” event, Burning of the Socks, from 4-7 p.m.

A free, fun event for the whole family, Burning of the Socks is a tradition on Grand Lake and everyone is invited to join in.

“It’s how we kick off flip-flop season,” said Harbors View Marina General Manager Robin Carpenter. “Everyone brings a pair of socks to symbolically throw in the fire.”

Burning of the Socks will feature the upbeat, high-energy cover band 5th Element and other fun activities, including inflatables for kids, face painting, a nautical flea market and a dunking booth manned by Harbors View Marina dockhands.

Proceeds from the Dunk the Dockhand booth will support Sox of Love, in Oklahoma City. Everyone attending is also asked to bring a pair of comfy or interesting socks to be donated to the charity, which seeks to “Warm Hearts, Feet First” by providing new socks to those in need.

The Northeast Technology Center’s Mobile Fire Extinguisher Training System trailer will also be at the Burning of the Socks event. Volunteer fireman Brandon Merritt will use it to present free fire extinguisher training to those in attendance.

Walking tacos will be served to all those in attendance and a cash bar will also be available.
