Celebrating the Life of Harry Cole: A Grand Lake Legend and Patriotic Hero

If you’ve been on Grand Lake, chances are you’ve visited Dripping Springs Marina. For most of us, that place is a treasure of amazing memories—some clear and others delightfully blurred. We all knew Harry Cole, the heart and soul of Dripping Springs. Whether you went there for the best fuel prices on the lake, or if you were speeding through the cove and he gave you a scolding, Harry touched so many of us over the years. His presence was a constant reminder of the community spirit that binds us together. Here’s to Harry Cole, a Grand Lake legend, and his remarkable life as detailed in the official obituary below: 

 

Harold Spencer Cole, aged 82, of Eucha, Oklahoma, was called to eternal rest on June 2, 2024. Born on December 16, 1941, in Riverside, California, Harolds life was marked by unwavering patriotism and dedication to his nation.
A native of Wellington, Kansas, Harold was raised in a nurturing family environment by his parents,and alongside his brothers and sister.

His collegiate years at Kansas State University fostered a lifelong affinity for the institution,symbolized by his enduring display of purple pride. He was also a devoted member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
Upon graduation, Harold honorably served his country in the U.S. Air Force, which included two distinguished tours of duty in Vietnam, two Bronze Stars for meritorious commitment, and Purple Heart for wounds received while deployed. His commitment to service continued in his civilian career as an engineer with the Veterans. Administration hospitals. His exemplary work ethic and leadership culminated in his role as Chief Engineer for the VA in Los Angeles, from which he retired.

In retirement, Harold returned to his cherished childhood haunt, Grand Lake, Oklahoma. There, he founded and managed a beloved marina, endearing himself to the community.

Harold leaves behind a legacy through his sons, Derek Mathew Cole and wife Sharon Evans, and Ward Martin Cole II and wife Leslie Thorne Cole; grandsons Brent Mathew Cole and Jackson Walker Cole; his brothers George Cole and wife Nanda, Sherman Cole and wife Candy, Charles Cole and wife Jan; and sister Mary Cole. Nieces Jackie and Sydna, and nephews Spencer, Clay, and Michael. And of course, his many friends and colleagues.


Harold's life will be commemorated with a service to be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later time. His family invites those whose lives were touched by Harold to join in honoring his memory. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to a veterans charity of your choice, in memory of Harold Spencer Cole.
