Grocery Shopping Tour Provides Students With Life Skills Lesson

Grand Nation recently held Cooking Matters at the Store

tours for Ketchum High School students.

Call it Adulting 101. A group of Ketchum High School students recently received an in-depth introduction to one of the many life skills needed as an adult — grocery shopping for a family.

On March 30, Grand Nation held two Cooking Matters at the Store tours at the Reasor’s grocery store in Langley for 34 students from KHS Leadership classes.

Conducted by Erin Williams of the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, the tours gave the students a lesson in the importance of grocery shopping as a life skill and how it involves more than just putting food in the shopping cart. The students learned about reading food labels, comparing unit prices, finding whole grain foods and identifying three ways to purchase produce.

The students were each given a $10 Reasor’s gift card and a reusable shopping bag and then challenged to use the skills they had just learned to buy a healthy meal for a family of four for under $10. They also received a booklet with recipes and shopping tips.

“We had a great day taking Ketchum High School students grocery shopping,” said Shannon Baker, Grand Nation assistant coordinator TSET Health Living Program. “We loved giving these students this real-life experience.

“We want to thank Erin for leading the tour and Reasor’s in Langley for the gift cards and shopping bags.”

Grand Nation also thanks Adam Teal, Tanner Brown, Camillie Pace, Ashley Morrison and Kait Floyd for their help, as well as Charley Scott and Jamie Sutton for allowing the nonprofit organization to hold the tours at Reasor’s.
