GRDA Police Continue Water Rescue Training

Officers of the GRDA Police Department joined several members of volunteer fire departments on the Illinois River last week to continue their training in conducting swift water rescues, just in time for the busy holiday weekend.
Responders learned techniques on how to use ropes and boats in the swift currents of the fast moving river. Officers assigned to the river and lake operations employ these strategies on a regular basis in an effort to save lives.
We are pleased to report that, in spite of the thousands of visitors we had at the GRDA lakes and rivers this holiday period, police investigated no reported drowning deaths!

Shoreline Cleanup Set for July 15

Get with your friends, neighbors and coworkers and join us to “lend a hand for Lady Grand”  July 15.  The annual shoreline cleanup initiative is sponsored by the Grand River Dam Authority and the Grand Lake Sail & Power Squadron. As in previous shoreline cleanup efforts, dumpsters will be located at several areas around the lake for the disposal of shoreline debris (no household or commercial trash, please). Those locations include:

  • Grove Springs Park in Grove
  • Bernice State Park in Bernice
  • Church on the Lake in Ketchum
  • GRDA Ecosystems Center in Langley

Dumpster locations will be open from 9AM to 2PM on July 15 and staffed by members of the GLSPS.   Each year, the effort of volunteers during the cleanup helps rid Grand Lake’s scenic shoreline of large amounts of unsightly debris. Not only does that make the lake area even more attractive, but it also makes it safer for all lake visitors.

SDBA Races Coming to Wolf Creek

The Southern Drag Boat Association is returning to Grand Lake for their annual Wolf Creek Nationals racing event. The Grand River Dam Authority Police Department is announcing that portions of the Wolf Creek arm of Grand Lake, as well as the Wolf Creek boat ramp will be closed during the Southern Drag Boat Association (SDBA) event held June 8 and 9. However, during this time, the department added that home owners will be allowed access to their private docks.

All vessel operators should watch for special event navigational buoys and officers that will be present in the area.

According to SDBA, the national race will feature a quarter mile track where spectators will be able to watch boats reaching speeds up to 200 miles per hour. The event is slated to include 100 racing teams and is expected to draw around 3,000 spectators. The race qualifications will be held on June 8 from 9 am to 6 pm, with racing heats held June 9 from 10 to 5 pm. For more information, visit www.sdbaracing.com.

GRDA Removes All BGA Advisories for Grand Lake

The Grand River Dam Authority is reportingthat the most recent results from its water sample testing in Grand and Hudson Lakeshave shown a negligible presence of bluegreen algae (BGA) toxins. Due to these results, GRDA is removing its public swim advisories for Grand Lake.

We want to thank the public and the lake community for all the cooperation during these advisories. We will continue our regular monitoring efforts across the lakes, but based on the most recent tests we believe it is safe to remove the advisories.

Those advisories had been in place for the Fly Creek and Highway 85A bridge areas of Grand Lake. No BGA blooms have been confirmed in any other area of the lakes. While GRDA continues to monitor water quality on both Grand and Hudson, algae blooms are dynamic and develop rapidly. It is recommended that individuals avoid swimming or participating in water recreational activities in areas where the water is discolored or where you see foam, scum or mats of algae on the water. The public is asked to report these areas of concern to GRDA at 918-256-0911.
