Looking back on GRDA’s 2016: Part 2

In its efforts to be an “Oklahoma agency of excellence” the Grand River Dam Authority was committed to sharing its “5E” mission throughout 2016. Every day, that mission focuses on employees, electricity, environmental stewardship, economic development and efficiency. And in 2016, there were many examples, both internally and externally, of ways in which those “E's” were in the spotlight.

On the employee front, 2016 was a year of safety milestones. At a special luncheon in mid-February, employees in the GRDA Transmission Maintenance, Relay, Engineering and Metering Departments were all recognized for achieving new safety records. Similar recognition has also come to the workforce at the Grand River Energy Center (GREC) recently as well. This continuing commitment to safety reflects the 5E employee pledge to be a “diverse and energetic workforce, working together in a safe environment and treating each other with dignity and respect.”

Meanwhile, GRDA’s environmental stewardship and economic development responsibilities were on display early in the year when the 2016 Bassmaster Classic took place on the waters of Grand Lake. No other lake in the nation has hosted this prestigious “Super Bowl of Fishing” tournament twice in such a short span (first time was 2013). However, Grand Lake once again provided competitors and spectators with the ideal backdrop and fishery for the event. More importantly, the Classic’s return brought worldwide attention to the region and a positive economic impact equaling millions of dollars. GRDA’s role in supporting and drawing the tournament actually began in 2012, when it helped to construct the Wolf Creek Tournament Complex, near Grove.

This look back at GRDA’s 2016 continues next week ….

Headquartered in Vinita, GRDA is Oklahoma’s state-owned electric utility; fully funded by revenues from electric and water sales instead of taxes. Each day, GRDA strives to be an “Oklahoma agency of excellence” by focusing on the 5 E’s: electricity, economic development, environmental stewardship, employees and efficiency.
