Busy Busy Weekend In Review by The Grand Lake Bum

We’re going to have to work really hard to jam more fun into a weekend than we had last weekend on Grand Lake. Even Mother Nature cooperated for the most part. The Friday morning Oklahoma Legislative Golf Tournament had a five-hour rain delay, but they still got the tournament in. The GLOC Shootout Performance Boat Races, Grand Lake Aquapalooza Raft-up, the Oklahoma Academy events, and the Oklahoma Grand Lake Legislative Getaway were all record-setting events on a wonderful sunny weekend on Grand Lake.

We’re going to have to step up our game, Grand Lake. We have the Grand Living on Grand Lake television show which is great – but Lake of the Ozarks now has a NETFLIX television series directed by and starring Jason Bateman. It’s about a couple who move with their children to Lake of the Ozarks from Chicago to escape a drug lord after a money laundering deal goes wrong. Money laundering and refugees running from drug lords at Lake of the Ozarks? Hmmm. They say the series is fiction, but I don’t know. Seriously, Ozark is available on NETFLIX beginning Friday night.

No, there was not a “12 foot alligator spotted in Grand Lake” as the farce Facebook post on Sunday indicated. I like to have as much fun as the next guy, but people should think twice about the negative impact on lake area businesses before they start spreading goofy fake news posts about things that would make people stay away from Grand Lake. Funny is funny…but that little Facebook trick was not.

Another health myth has been debunked by new medical studies. All these years that people have been telling you coffee wasn’t good for you…they were wrong. The new studies released last week show that coffee not only contains anti-oxidants and boosts energy and performance when absorbed into your system – but it can also help ward off diabetes, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and depression – and while boosting performance, it also helps to protect the liver. Yep, I’d say the people warning that coffee was dangerous were a little off base. Drink up! Let your life slow down.

It’s not my imagination. A new survey conducted as part of a nationwide Kars4Kids safe driving program confirms it. Oklahoma drivers aren’t the rudest in the country, but we’re close. Drivers in Oklahoma earned a “D” on the survey report card and a ranking of 43rd in the courteous driving category. Only Georgia, Maine, Wisconsin, Louisiana, Arkansas, South Carolina, and New York were rated worse than Oklahoma drivers. Our biggest hit came from the fact that few Oklahoma drivers seem to know how to work turn signals. The most courteous drivers, if you’re wondering, are in Idaho. Small wonder.  How many drivers are in Idaho? Five hundred?

Don’t be mean to your food! A restaurant owner near Florence, Italy was fined 2,000 Euros by the nation’s highest court last month after the court ruled it was illegal to keep lobsters on ice because it causes them undue suffering. “The suffering caused by detaining the animals while they wait to be cooked cannot be justified,” the judges wrote. So…no more fresh lobster dinners in Florence, I guess.

Have you heard about the dress code protests resulting from record-breaking heat in Europe? The first incident happened at Isca Academy in Exeter, England where male students protested the “no shorts” policy of the school by wearing skirts issued to the female students as part of the school’s uniform policy. Following suit, bus drivers in Nantes, France did the same thing – donning skirts to stay cool while avoiding the company’s “no shorts” rule. It worked. The guys may now wear shorts “as long as they match the required uniform colors.”

More proof that you can’t fix stupid. The Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy reports that a recent survey indicates as many as 16.4 million Americans believe chocolate milk comes from brown cows. Really. Almost half of the survey respondents had no idea where chocolate milk comes from. Just think. Those people vote! Are you scared yet?

Patricia Krentcil is thinking about suing her daughter’s school in Nutley, New Jersey. Whether she does or not, she’s furious! Why? Because her daughter came home from school with a bad sunburn from recess. You might not think that’s a big deal, but it is to Patricia who became known as “Tan Mom” about five years ago when the same school turned her in to authorities who charged her with child endangerment for taking her daughter to use a tanning bed.

Weather for the weekend ahead looks like you would expect in July – hot! We’ll have sunshine with highs in the mid 90s and lows in the mid-70s. Next week, other than being a little warmish, it should be perfect weather for the dozens of guests competing in the Tri-State Women’s Golf Championship Monday & Tuesday at Shangri-La. Get out and enjoy all Grand Lake has to offer, but remember, wherever you decide to play, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you.  It could be me.
