Daylight Savings Time Weekend In Review by The Grand Lake Bum

My life got better at 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning. There’s something about the arrival of Daylight Saving Time that just makes you feel better! Don’t you think? In fact, I think we should do away with standard time altogether and live on DST all year-round.  It makes a lot more sense to me to have the extra daylight at the end of the day where everybody can enjoy it instead of having it at the beginning of the day when 80 percent of us sleep through it.

It was fun to see the bagpipers back on Grand for the big St. Patrick’s Day Party at Monkey Island Pub Saturday night. Not that it takes much prodding to push us into party mode, but the fact that St. Patrick’s Day falls on Friday this year only gives Grand Lakers a chance to extend the party to a full eight days.

It’s hard to believe we have already breezed through the OKC, Tulsa, and Grand Lake Boat Shows – Welcome Back Weekend Festivities, the return of Daylight Saving Time, and now – Spring Break 2017 is behind us and March Madness is underway! Next up is St. Patrick’s Day, then Easter, then boats will start filling Woodward Hollow, Party Cove, and Dripping Springs on weekends. Winter, we knew ye not (nor did we have any desire to know ye better!)

There may be hope for my friends in Kansas, after all. President Trump is actually repaying Kansans who voted for him with a big favor.  He’s naming Governor Brownback Ambassador to Italy. With him on the other side of the Atlantic, Kansas may actually have a chance to survive.

Now I’ve heard everything. A new medical study indicates you can get rid of a problem with stinky armpits – if you can find a donor. The doctors studied identical twins, one with stinky pits and one without. They found that, over time, they could eliminate the stench of the stinky-sweat twin by dabbing his armpits regularly with sweat from the non-stinky-sweat twin. That makes me wonder if you could get rid of smelly breath by finding a spit-swapping donor. At least the research would be fun (for half the research team).

Consultant Peter Bender really got into his job researching Hanes underwear products for the Chicago Tribune – not just the regular undies, but also the Playtex and Maindenform women’s brands. So what’s a male researchers reaction to three days in a sports bra, an underwire bra, and a lacy bra? “These things are difficult,” he wrote in his blog for the Tribune – “The lacy one was especially itchy.” Now you know, boys.

Albeit by the slimmest of margins, the majority of the Oklahoma House of Representatives voted last week to confirm their belief that Oklahoma voters don’t know what they’re doing. They voted to override last fall’s overwhelming passage of State Question 780, reducing the simple possession of many drugs from felony status to a misdemeanor. Fifty-one members of the House decided that voters didn’t know what they were doing when they expressed their will. I contend that voters obviously didn’t know what they were doing when they voted to elect those fifty-one House members!  The bill still has to be passed by the Senate and signed by the Governor before the will of the people is officially overridden.  You might give ‘em a call. You can’t tell. There may still be an elected official or two who cares what voters think. (A buddy of mine was proof-reading this paragraph and thought it started out…”Albeit by the slimiest of margins…”  That works, too.)

Just because you have the right to carry a gun, that apparently does not give you the right to use it to avoid having your drunk ass thrown out of a bar – twice. Eli Kasper learned the less at the Wobbly Barn in Killington, Vermont. After being thrown out of the bar for being drunk, he returned to defend his honor – and his spot at the bar – with a gun. During the ensuing fight, he was too drunk to hang onto his gun. Now he just faces more charges. It’s probably good advice to leave your gun at home when you plan on defending your right to be drunk and obnoxious.

Who’s number 1? U.S. News & World Report, in conjunction with the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, has released the 2017 list of “Best Countries in the World.” We always assume it’s us, of course..but, as it turns out, it’s not us.  Out of seven different ranking categories, the U.S. only made the top five in one category – Most Powerful – where we ranked #1 ahead of Russia & China. Overall rankings for “Best Countries” dropped the U.S. from fourth to seventh this year. The top 6 ahead of the U.S.  (in order) were Switzerland, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, and Sweden. If you’re thinking of someplace else to spend your golden years, the top three countries for “a comfortable retirement” were New Zealand, Australia, and Switzerland.

Weekend weather ahead looks way better than last weekend – about 30 degrees better. We may have a scattered shower or two Friday, but otherwise – nice – with highs in the mid-70s Saturday & Sunday. It’s perfect weather for a Grand Lake party weekend to wrap up Spring Break! Remember, though, wherever you decide to play, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you.  It could be me.
