Fall Back Weekend in Review

If you’re finding that you are arriving at every appointment an hour early, it’s because you forgot to set your clock back before you went to bed Saturday night.  Sheesh. “I look forward to setting my clock back so it gets dark at 5:00 in the afternoon,” said NO ONE…EVER! I’m afraid it’s going to take me a couple of weeks to adjust enough to even stay up until the bars close!

I thought the election would never get here. That Presidential campaign got so dirty, I think I’ll take a bath – for about a week! We still have two months of complaining from the people whose candidate lost, I guess. At least at this point, I do still have a few Facebook friends.  How ‘bout you?

Only in Florida. Police arrested a man at a Publix supermarket in West Palm Beach for trespassing and screaming at employees and customers.  They checked his I.D.  Sure enough. It was Vladimir Putin. Either it wasn’t the same Vladimir Putin you’re thinking of – or the authorities didn’t recognize him with his shirt on.

I can imagine such a thing happening at the Delaware County Jail but, in this case, it happened in Youngstown, Ohio where 25 year old Raymond Brooks was arrested on multiple charges including being a felon in possession of a gun.  In all seriousness, he asked officers if he could have his gun back after he was finished with booking.  I didn’t catch the answer from the officers, but I probably couldn’t print it in a family publication anyway.  You can’t fix stupid.

Oklahoma got a little – and I mean “little” – recognition during the recent 100th anniversary celebration of America’s National Park Service. A park in Guthrie was recognized as the smallest park – 10 ft. X 10 ft. Apparently, a city clerk back in 1889 is to blame. Instead of turning in a request to the feds for land “100-foot square” (100 ft. X 100 ft.), the clerk mistakenly asked for “100 square feet” (10 ft. X 10 ft.).  The miniature park is still there, behind the Post Office.

Bad things can happen to you when you’re under anesthesia. But it’s rare that it’s something you do yourself.  It happened in Tokyo, though, at the Tokyo Medical University Hospital. A thirty-something patient was apparently a little gassy when she went in for a procedure that involved laser to her cervix. One little instance of unintended flatulence caught the laser on fire. She had significant burns to her waist and legs (among other places). Don’t eat beans before surgery.

If you had your heart set on spending eternity in one of those beautiful, legendary caskets from the famous Batesville Casket Company in Mississippi, you’d better start making your arrangements. The company is closing its plant in Batesville in March 2017 and moving production to Mexico. I guess those 200 jobs that sounded so good to Batesville residents were actually just dead end jobs, after all. Once the company gets to Mexico, I’m sure they’ll find some other stiffs to take the jobs.

In the college football world, Saturday morning at 11:00 is an important time. The big news is not that OU will host Baylor at that time (ABC). It’s not that Alabama hosts Mississippi State (ESPN) – or that Navy hosts the University of Tulsa (CBSSN). It’s that Kansas plays Iowa State – and someone has to actually win the game. It’ll be a big day for one of them!

North Carolina is at Duke to kick off the weekend of play Thursday night (6:30 on ESPN) Utah and Arizona State also playThursday night (8:30 on FS1).  Friday night, Florida State hosts Boston College (6:30 on ESPN2).

On Saturday, in addition to the games above, Texas Tech is at Oklahoma State (2:30 on FS1) and Arkansas hosts LSU (6:00on ESPN). Other big Saturday games include Pittsburgh at Clemson (2:30 on ABC), Penn State at Indiana (11:00 on ESPN2), USC at Washington (6:30 on Fox), Michigan at Iowa (7:00 on ABC), and California at Washington State (9:30 on ESPN).

The NBA action features Chicago at Miami and the Lakers at Sacramento in Thursday night action on TNT (7:00 and 9:30respectively). Friday night the OKC Thunder hosts the L.A. Clippers at 7:00 (Fox Sports Oklahoma and NBA-TV). Sundaynight the Thunder will host Orlando (6:00 on Fox Sports Oklahoma) before heading to Detroit for a Monday niht game (6:30on Fox Sports Oklahoma).

NFL action kicks off Thursday night with Cleveland at Baltimore (7:30 on NFL). Sunday include Minnesota at Washington or Green Bay at Tennessee (Fox) and Kansas City at Carolina (CBS), all at noon. The 3:30 game on Fox will feature Dallas at Pittsburgh. Sunday night (7:30 on NBC), Seattle will be in New England; and Monday Night Football sends Cincinnati to New York to face the Giants (7:30 on ESPN).

The PGA Tour is in beautiful Playa del Carmen, Mexico this week for the OHL Classic at Mayakoba. Coverage is on the Golf Channel beginning at noon Thursday-Sunday.

In the NASCAR world, it’s racing in the desert this week.  Coverage of the Can-Am 500 from Phoenix International Raceway starts at 1:30 Sunday on NBC.

The weekend weather ahead looks absolutely perfect for your favorite outdoor activity.  It’ll be cool in the evenings (40s), but sunny with light winds and high temperatures in the mid-60s in the daytime. What a November, huh? The only bad thing is that5:15 sunset. I suppose we’ll get used to it, though. Be safe, be kind, and have a great weekend. While you’re out having fun, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you.  It could be me.
