January 20 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum

Here we go, boys and girls. Monday night, January 27, is the official opening of the 54th Annual Tulsa Boat, Sport & Travel Show – the official “mid-winter reunion” for Grand Lakers who haven’t seen each other in a while. The show opens at 5:00 Monday afternoon for VIP night. Tickets that night are $15 but include “free food and beer – while supplies last” (heavy emphasis on the “while supplies last.”) Tickets for the show Tuesday-Sunday are $10. It’s an incredible show, to be sure – and the true economic indicator for the Grand Lake economy in the year ahead. If the much smaller Oklahoma City Boat Show held earlier this month is any indication, things are looking good for 2020!

The Oklahoma legislature goes into session February 3. So…heeeeere we go. Now Senators Nathan Dahm and Marty Quinn are continuing their bromance with President Trump. They have introduced legislation that would allow personalized MAGA – Make America Great Again – license plates. If we’re going to have taxpayer paid campaign materials, what’s next? An amendment to the legislation that also allows “Feel the Bern” plates? By the way, these guys must really like the President. They’re the same two who proposed renaming Route 66 as Donald Trump Highway. That bill was instantly withdrawn because of the backlash. Presumably the same will happen with this one.

I’ve always thought TV and movie icon Betty White would make a great Grand Laker. On her 98th birthday Friday, she said the secrets to her long life included “hot dogs and vodka.” Now, I’ve found another prospect for a move to Grand Lake. Andrew Slavonic would fit right in with the Grand Lake culture. The World War II veteran just turned 102 years old and, predictably, he was asked the secret to his longevity. He had a simple answer: “I drink Coors Light every day.” Needless to say, when that news went viral, his days of buying beer were over – Miller-Coors Brewing saw to that. Asked if he had any other tips, he added, “Just look at the can. The bluer the mountains are on the can, the better!” My pal Kenny would fit right into that lifestyle. He’s always said, “The very best beer is ice cold – and someone else’s.”

Speaking of beer, the brewers of Natural Light beer are apparently hoping to catch the newbies with a big promo. The company has announced they will provide a rebate for a free case of Natty Light for everyone who turns 21 this year. On a local note, packaging and brewing recipes have been finalized for the new “Grand Lake Light Ale” brewed by Marshall Brewing of Tulsa. The new Grand Lake beer will make its debut on the lake April 29.

Only in Florida. On Christmas Eve, a 20-year-old Bradenton, Florida man was awakened by someone sucking his toes. Yep. You read that right. Startled, he asked the home invader what he was doing. “I’m here to suck toes,” he said. The victim struggled with the suspect and managed to get him out of his house; but the invader broke out a window in the house, and broke the windshield on the victim’s car. Apparently these toe-sucking bandits are serious about not being interrupted. Can you imagine? That REALLY sucks!

SPORTS WATCH! Now that we know who will be in the Super Bowl, we’ll take a week for their injuries to heal up and hair over – and we’ll watch the elite match skills in the Pro Bowl. Coverage is at 2:00 Sunday on ABC and ESPN.

The NBA schedule has the OKC Thunder with back-to-back home & away games to start this week’s schedule. They’ll host Atlanta Friday night at 7:00 before facing Minnesota on the road Saturday night at 7:00. Monday, they’re at home hosting Dallas at 7:00; and Wednesday, they’re back on the road at Sacramento for a 9:00 o’clock tip-off. All games are on Fox Sports Oklahoma.

There’s some good college basketball, as well. Saturday is the Big 12/SEC Challenge in Oklahoma City. OU takes on Mississippi State at 1:00. OSU plays Texas A&M and Arkansas faces TCU, both at 3:00. All games are televised on either ESPN2 or ESPNU. Sunday morning, Tulsa faces UConn at 11:00 on the CBS Sports Network. Monday night, Kansas is at Oklahoma State (8:00 on ESPN).

PGA Players are still in California. This week, they’re at historic Torrey Pines for the Farmers Insurance Open. Tiger and Jordan Spieth are among players committed for this one. Coverage is on the Golf Channel beginning at 2:00 Thursday & Friday and noon Saturday & Sunday. CBS picks up the final two rounds at 2:00 Saturday & Sunday.

*****

The weekend ahead looks dry and mild (for the last weekend in January). We’ll have clouds Friday & Saturday with highs in the mid-40s; then sunshine and a ten-degree temperature jump Sunday. It looks like a perfect weekend for the big Whiskey Kitchen Blues Bash at Shangri-La Saturday night, followed by the opening of the  Tulsa Boat Show Monday. Party on! Remember, though… wherever you decide to party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me.
