October 14 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum

If you missed last weekend at Grand Lake, you missed an absolutely perfect Fall weekend. The only thing more beautiful than Saturday’s OU win over Texas was the weather at Grand Lake; and the only thing more beautiful than Saturday’s weather was Sunday’s weather. What a perfect time to enjoy the beauty of Grand! The Pelican Festival in Grove was awesome – and, although most of them arrived the week of the festival, the pelicans were here in full force!

Congratulations to DCCSAN (Delaware County Children’s Special Advocacy Network) Director Jill McAbee and the crew at Shangri-La Resort for putting together a great fundraising event last Saturday with the perfect format for Grand Lake fun. It was great to see so many folks show up to support DCCSAN in the “0.5K Run” at Shangri-La. The hilarious signs of “encouragement” and the “hydration station” established halfway through the 547 yard “endurance run” added a great touch. Best of all for Grand Lake runners, though, was the bar at the starting line – and a complete OU-Texas Tailgate Party at the finish line. More great fun for a great cause. Trent Richey was a running machine, and he crossed the finish line first; but most of the participants walked. Apparently, the sign along the course was indicative of their attitude: “I tried running,” it said, “but I kept spilling my wine.”

Did you read about the vegan woman who turned her friends in to police after they fed her chicken nuggets as a prank while she was drunk? Her friends are now charged with food tampering. She posted on the website Reddit, “Now three of my (ex) friends are facing charges.” The site is labeled “Am I the a**hole?” Well…yes. You are.

President Trump told a crowd in Lake Charles, Louisiana that he vowed to put a man on the moon as part of his plans for a space program. He must have been really busy to miss the 12 Americans who walked on the moon since 1969. He has actually met Buzz Aldrin, who pioneered the moon landings with Neil Armstrong. They must not have discussed his moonwalk.

Television networks must not realize how big the U.S. is when naming their TV programs. Saturday, OU and West Virginia will play on “Big Noon Fox Saturday.” Don’t be misled. Game time in this part of the country is 11:00 a.m. It must be really confusing to west coast viewers where “Big Noon” happens at 9:00 a.m. No wonder kids can’t tell time anymore.

I’ve heard of the rare “man bites dog” line…but I’ve never before heard of an actual event like – “Dog shoots woman!” It happened in Enid when a dog in the back seat of a car was spooked by a passing train, jumped onto the console of the car, hit the trigger on a loaded gun and shot her owner in the leg. With Oklahoma’s new Open Carry law that doesn’t require any permitting or training, I don’t guess any charges will be filed against Molly, the 7-month old Labrador.

The fight against plastic waste is a never-ending battle, but bars in Italy are joining the fight by substituting straws made of pasta. That brings an entirely acceptable new light to the phrase, “drinking my lunch.”

*****

HEALTH TIP OF THE WEEK: A study released by the University of Exeter, England says red wine and chocolate help fight wrinkles and keep skin young. The researchers said the tasty combination makes old cells behave like young cells. I’m guessing they just did enough “research” to make old researchers behave like young researchers. I’m pretty sure the red-wine-and-chocolate diet actually gets rid of wrinkles by filling them up with fat.

OBSERVATION OF THE WEEK: They call them “heated seats” because “rear defroster” was already taken.

It’s week #8 of the college football season – and it’s Homecoming Weekend for both OU and OSU. The Sooners host West Virginia Saturday morning at 11:00 and Baylor travels to Stillwater for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff, both on Fox. Tulsa is on the road in Cincinnati (2:30 on ESPNU).

NFL action moves into week #7 with Kansas City at Denver Thursday night at 7:00 on Fox. Sunday games include Minnesota at Detroit (Fox) and Oakland at Green Bay (CBS), both at noon. Major League Baseball is down to the really serious part of the season. We’re down to the final four. American and National League Championships will be decided this week – and the World Series begins next Tuesday on Fox.

If you’re not watching the World Series opener, you can watch the NBA opener. Regular season play starts Tuesday on TNT with New Orleans at Toronto at 7:00 and a crosstown rivalry as the Clippers host the Lakers at 9:30. Fall-like weather continues this weekend. We may have a few showers Saturday morning, but we’ll all be watching football, anyway. For the most part, we’ll have sunshine with highs in the mid-70s and lows around 60. Get out and have a fabulous time both on the lake and at your favorite club or restaurant.  Remember, though… wherever you decide to party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me.
