Vintage by the Creek Popping Up in Grove on June 10
Outdoor Pop-Up Market Offers Shopping, Activities and Fun
By Martha J. Henderson
Grand Lake’s outdoor pop-up market, Vintage By The Creek, is having a tailgate party Saturday, June 10, and you’re invited to attend this free one-day event.
Set against a unique backdrop of seven vintage campers, Vintage By The Creek is a one-of-a-kind experience that offers a quirky blend of shopping, socializing and activities.
This is the third year Vintage By The Creek has popped up in Grove, each time bringing together an interesting collection of boutiques and vendors featuring new and trendy inventory, as well as one-of-a-kind items, antiques, vintage finds, retro pieces and hand-crafted treasures.
Vintage By The Creek organizer and founder Kim Hacker is expecting nearly 60 vendors from Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas for the June 10 event, making this pop-up market event the largest she has hosted.
“We’re growing every year. Last year, we had 40 vendors. This year we’ll have around 60, and we’re still looking for more,” Hacker said. “We’ll also have shoppers from all around too.”
According to Hacker, shoppers will not be disappointed with the variety of items vendors are bringing to the pop-up market. The selection will include handmade jewelry and purses, clothing for adults and children, refurbished and repurposed furniture, metal art, home decor, candles and hats.
There also will be potted plants and flowers, baby clothes, hooded towels for infants and much more.
“Meet Me at the Tailgate”
“Meet Me at the Tailgate” is the theme for this pop-up market, which is Vintage By The Creek’s first of the 2017 season.
“The first 100 customers get a ‘Meet Me at the Tailgate’ tote bag,” Hacker said. “The bags will contain information about restaurants and other stores in the area, as well as information about the community.”
The organizers of Vintage By The Creek also will have “Meet Me at the Tailgate” T-shirts for sale. Available in a variety of colors, each shirt is emblazoned with a descriptive word, like sassy, fierce, flirty, bubbly and onery. The proceeds from the T-shirt sales go to the Alzheimer’s Foundation. Hacker invites shoppers to choose the one that best fits their personality and help a good cause as well.
Activities for Everyone
The fun at Vintage By The Creek starts at 10 a.m. and continues until 3 p.m., and goes way beyond shopping. Hacker said the event will also include music, wine tasting, professional photography, art and crafts classes, pony rides and food trucks.
According to Hacker, DiamondHead Wine, of Pryer, will be hosting a wine tasting during the pop-up market.
“They are very popular. They sold out all their cases of wine last year,” Hacker said.
Professional photographer Jennifer Houseman will be set up at Vintage By The Creek for mini photography sessions for families.
“Jennifer does a super fantastic job,” Hacker said. “She uses props and the natural surroundings as backdrops. It is a great time for senior pictures or families can do a photo shoot with the kids.”
Houseman will be offering two different packages: an $85 package that includes a 20-minute session, an 11x14-inch mounted portrait and one digital image, and a $145 package for a 30-minute session, a 16x20-inch mounted portrait and three digital images.
To reserve an appointment with Houseman at the Vintage By The Creek pop-up market, call (918) 314-6959.
An art class and a crafts class at Vintage By The Creek will give attendees a chance to release their inner artist. Located in a shaded area under an awning, the classes will include painting an anchor on canvas for $10 and crafting a sunflower door hanging for a $50 fee.
The sunflower crafting class will be held at 2 p.m. To reserve a spot in the class, visit Vintage By The Creek’s Facebook page or contact Hacker at (918) 791-1849.
Pony rides are a new attraction at Vintage By The Creek this year. Children 75 pounds and under can ride the pony rides, which will be available throughout the day.
A variety of food trucks will also be on hand during Vintage By The Creek to satisfy every appetite. These trucks will include the Travelin’ Pig barbecue truck, Breenie’Z Soft Pretzels and Pot Lickers.
Local eatery Raggedy’s Cafe will also be serving up delicious food, while the Giggle Box will have a selection of drinks, including lemonade, to quench your thirst.
Cotton candy, kettle corn, funnel cakes, hamburgers and walking tacos are some of the tasty items that will be available.
Where It All Began
Vintage By The Creek outdoor pop-up market got its start as a hobby.
Hacker, a physical education instructor and basketball and track coach at Grove Public Schools, was “always a big fan of ‘junking’ and vintage trailers.” She also knew several ladies who shared the same passion.
“I wondered why we couldn’t take something we all enjoy and share it with the visitors to this town we love,” Hacker said. “My friends agreed, so we got our tiny, cute trailers together, along with our handmade and vintage items, and never looked back.”
In addition to coming up with ideas and setting up for the Vintage By The Creek events, the ladies also are vendors at the pop-up markets.
“Our core group has stuck together. Some of the ladies work at the school like me,” Hacker said, “The others include a hairstylist, a teacher, a lawyer and a CFO. Our common bond is Vintage By The Creek.
“We have fun doing it. I absolutely love it. Our dream and aspiration is to get so big we have to move to a bigger location.”
Vintage By The Creek is located at 1621 South Broadway, next to the Grove Civic Center. The Saturday, June 10, event will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Two more events are planned for the 2017 season, including “Sweet Autumn” on October 7, and “We Wish You a Merry!” on November 11.
