Langley Public Library Hosting 10th Annual Bunco Bash Friday

Have you ever heard of a game called Bunco? Well, the friends of the Langley Public Library sure have, and you’re invited to join them at Grand Lake’s premier Bunco Bash.

Bunco was originally a confidence game similar to three card monte. Originating from 18th-century England, the game quickly became known as “eight dice cloth”.

Shipped and transported to the States as a gambling activity in 1855, Bunco parlors became wildly popular in San Francisco. After the Civil War, the game evolved into a popular parlor game.

After the turn of the 20th Century, specifically during the 1920s and Prohibition, Bunco became popular once again as a gambling game often associated with speakeasies. Law-enforcement groups raiding these parlors came to be known as Bunco squads.

Despite its long history of association with gambling and activity during the Prohibition, Bunco reemerged as a family game in the 1980s.

Fast forward to the 21st century, here in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, where the game continues to pave its way through modern gaming. The Friends of Langley Public is hosting its 10th annual Bunco Bash, continuing the legacy the game holds here in the States.

This year’s event will be held Friday, Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Gavin Hall at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church in Langley. This will be the 10th annual Bunco Bash and will include lunch, games and door prizes.

The theme this year is “Tailgate” and attendees are more than welcome to sport their favorite jersey or fan gear.

All proceeds from the Bunco Bash will support library programs such as the Summer Reading Program, 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten and the new Learning Express Library.

Tickets for the event are $10 and are available at the Langley Public Library or from any Friends member.
