The sunny weather set the mood for excitement, as many turned out to enjoy the abundance of calf fries prepared by teams competing in the cook-off. The waiting lines swelled with hundreds of eager calf fry lovers, ready to dive into some of the best dinners around.
Announced by the Vinita Chamber of Commerce, winners of the 38th annual World’s Largest Calf Fry Festival and Cook-Off include Belle of Ball – Oklahoma State Bank, Showmanship – Hayes Construction/Larry Body Works, Good Ole Boy – Junior’s Wrecker Service, People’s Choice Award – Oklahoma State Bank; Calf Fry Award – Afton/Vinita Masonic Lodge, Cowboy Bread – Farmers Insurance, Cowboy Beans – Farmers Insurance, Cowboy Cobbler – Afton/Vinita Masonic Lodge and Bizarre Foods – Afton/Vinita Masonic Lodge.
The ranch-style cuisine wasn’t the only thing that attracted the crowd to the festival. A variety of attractions were available to the kids, including a bouncy house, a petting zoo by Safari Joe’s Reptile World and pony rides. A mechanical bull and karaoke were also part of the fun.
Numerous vendors set up shop during the festival in hopes of catching the eyes of event-goers to their unique items. One of these vendors, Buckboard Quilts, gave 100 percent of festival profits to the Vinita Salvation Army, raising more than $1,500.
With the help of volunteers from Vinita’s Salvation Army, Judy Howard, the owner of Buckboard Quilts, also performed an antique quilt bed turning, showcasing many unique and vintage quilts.
Whether it’s the award-worthy calf fry dinners, unique artifacts or just plain fun for the whole family, festival-goers from all around the area look forward to the annual event for many different reasons.
