Responsible Party Hosting

Responsible Party Hosting
With Thanksgiving arriving later this week, it will soon be time for us to plan our holiday celebrations. As we approach the holiday party season, take some time to ensure the celebrations that you host will always end with positive memories, not a tragedy.
FIRST BE A FRIEND - THEN A HOST
Host a great party and prevent the tragedy of a drunk driving crash when your guests leave. Practice the ABCs of party giving!
The ABC'S of Party Giving:
ALCOHOL ALERTNESS
Be sure your guests are the life of the party. Here are some tips for responsible hosting:
·      Ask them to choose a designated driver for the evening, a person who will remain sober during the party and drive the group home.
·      Have a car key collection when your guests arrive. Tag the keys much like coats and hats.
·      When guests leave, detect their level of intoxication. If you feel they would be unsafe behind the wheel, call them a cab or arrange for other transportation.
·      Mix drinks yourself, avoid open bars. Limit mixing drinks with carbonation, as carbonated beverages increase alcohol absorption.
·      Close your bar 90 minutes before your party is over – and don’t encourage “one for the road."
·      Offer alternative non-alcoholic drink options such as water, soft drinks, tea, coffee and mocktails. Find links to recipes below.
As the party host, you need to ensure the safety of your guests, so limit your alcohol consumption, also.
BUFFET
Always serve high protein foods, such as cheese and meats. They stay in the stomach longer and slow down the rate of intoxication. Mashed potatoes and beans (as well as other starchy foods) are great too. Minimize salt. Salt makes people thirsty and speeds up intoxication. Serve dips and spreads with unsalted or low-salt crackers or raw vegetables. Also consider cold-cut trays, cheese fondues and cheese balls. Always provide non-alcoholic drinks; soft drinks, juices, punch, sugar-free beverages and delight everyone with attractive, delicious Mocktails.
CARPOOL
Arrange ride-share or cab rides, make transportation with a sober “designated driver” available, or invite intoxicated friends to sleep over. For irate intoxicated guests, “hide” their car keys until they have found another ride home. You may feel as if you have lost a friend that night, but you will have an even better friend the next morning.
Remember: only TIME will make your guests sober. Not coffee and not cold showers. It takes about one hour to burn off an average drink. Five ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer and 1 1/2 ounces of liquor all contain about the same amount of alcohol. Keep watch on their behavior. Sleepy, too talkative, too giddy, and uncoordinated guests are under the influence, so make sure they do not attempt to leave till you know they are safe to do so.

MOCKTAILS ZERO-PROOF DRINKS ARE LIFESAVERS

MOCKTAILS ZERO-PROOF DRINKS AR
Fashionable non-alcoholic drinks you can provide to your guests that are tasty and attractive can be a terrific alternative to serving alcoholic beverages at your holiday party. Party-givers can serve them interspersed with regular cocktails, or as an alternative drink as you begin to wind the activities down at the end of the night, and give a tasty treat to your guests that are your designated safe drivers. Non-drinkers enjoy mocktails as fun-to-make, festive beverages, and kids love them because it makes them feel like they’re a part of the party.
Mocktails are a great alternative to give that festive and delicious edge to your guests to help ensure that everyone arrives home safely after your celebration. Click on the above links to find recipes for a variety of mocktail recipes from AAA to serve to your guests.

GRDA Officer Graduates OSBI Academy

GRDA Officer Graduates OSBI Ac
GRDA's Police Officer Tyler Cooper recently graduated from the 15th Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Academy. GRDA’s Chief of Police Brian Edwards and Major Chris Carlson attended the graduation ceremony in Oklahoma City last week for Officer Cooper, who has now completed the same training OSBI agents must complete, which included topics of investigations such as fingerprinting, photography, evidence identification and collection, blood splatter patterns, interviewing, courtroom testimony, a firearms course, and report writing. GRDA CEO Dan Sullivan recently stated "We are very proud of his efforts and how he represented GRDA with that Academy".
GRDA is fortunate to have a number of police officers employed by the agency that have developed advanced skills through specialized training in a number of specialties in law enforcement.

Eco Courtesy Dock Closed

Eco Courtesy Dock Closed

Work continues to progress on the shoreline stabilization project near the Ecosystems and Education Center. The Grand River Dam Authority is working on the shoreline near the courtesy dock located on Grand Lake, just behind the center in Langley, which is closed temporarily. Because of the presence of heavy equipment in the area, it is necessary to close the dock and the access path to allow the work to proceed safely. GRDA anticipates the project will be completed in late November.

Boating Tips From the GLSPS

Boating Tips From the GLSPS
Single hull boats less than 20 feet long must be manufactured with flotation. Inboard and I/O boats must have enough flotation to keep some portion of the boat above the surface of the water after flooding or capsizing accident. Outboard boats must float level at or just below the surface of the water if holed or swamped, even when loaded with passengers and gear. Sailboats, canoes, kayaks and inflatable boats are exempt from compliance with this standard.

Each boat should have a certification label stating that it meets USCG Safety Standards. It may be a separate label or combined with the maximum capacities label.
Interested in becoming more confident in your boating skills? Boat Smart from the start and take a course from America’s Boating Club, the United States Power Squadrons. For local information visit our website at: usps.org/grandlake or on Face Book at GLSPS.

Registering and Titling Outboard Motors
Outboard motors over 10 horsepower must be titled and have a current Certificate of Registration.
Application for a title and registration of an outboard motor is made separately from the boat and also must be made within 30 days of the purchase or transfer. Titling and registering a boat and its outboard motor requires completion of two application forms—one for the boat and one for the motor.
Owners of registered motors are issued a motor registration decal that should be displayed on the upper back side of the motor beginning from the left (as viewed if you are standing behind the motor) and wrapping around to the rear.
The owner of an outboard motor chooses to have the motor registered for a one-year or a three-year period. Registration expires on June 30 of the year indicated on the motor registration decal.
