Back To School by Jewels From The Word
Even though it was hot, I loved going back to school. Summer vacation was fun, but became boring really fast, especially after Vacation Bible school and Camp Fire Girls day camp was over.
I loved new school supplies. Mother always saw to it that we had what we needed to start school. Besides school supplies, we usually got new shoes. Our mother sewed our clothes or we wore second-hand clothes, but they were always clean and mended.
Mother taught us to respect our teachers and study hard. She valued education and it was important to her that her children be well educated. She didn’t stand over us and help us study, but she made sure we did our homework and provided the time and opportunity to study.
Jesus went to school too. In those days the boys studied the Old Testament in the synagogue. When Jesus was twelve, He went with His parents and others to the temple in Jerusalem.
“After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” Luke 2:41-47, 52 New International Version.
Jesus had been taught by the leaders in the synagogue and by His parents. The teachers were surprised at His understanding and answers. He didn’t just automatically know everything, even though He is fully God, but when He came to earth in bodily form, He was taught just as we are.
Make sure your children have the opportunity to study and learn, not just their school work, but learn about God. As Jesus was raised in the synagogue, be sure your children are raised in church, so they can “grow in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.”
