With all of the forthcoming holiday festivities, shopping, and getting into the spirit of giving, it is easy to forget about all of our furry friends in need. Pictured is Tripp - a handsome black lab who is looking for a "Home for the Holidays". It is hard to understand why this young male lab has not been adopted yet. He has been at the shelter since mid-August. His temperament is outstanding, and he is so eager to please. He gets along well with other dogs. He has had several kennel mates that have been adopted, yet he keeps getting overlooked. The shelter workers feel that it is only because black dogs are just so hard to place as they just don't show well in the kennel environment. However, Tripp is a wonderful dog and would make a great companion dog for any family.
You can make the Christmas season brighter for Tripp and for all the homeless animals by helping out Second Chance Pet Rescue during this holiday season. Although all of the animals in our care need a home for the Holidays, there are many other ways you can help during the "Season of Giving":
1. Substitute your own gift for a donation. When someone asks what they can buy you this year for the Holidays, request that they instead make a donation to Second Chance Pet Rescue of Grand Lake. Your gift will make a homeless animal's holiday wish come true!
2. Donate needed supplies to help reduce shelter costs. Our shelter currently cares for over 75 dogs/puppies and 60 cats/kittens on a daily basis. The everyday cost of cleaning supplies, dog and cat food, and kitty litter becomes astronomical. Donated supplies from the public are beneficial. Supplies needed are: Dawn dish soap, bleach, laundry detergent, non-clumping cat litter, dry and canned "Pedigree" dog and puppy food (to keep dogs on a consistent food diet), dry and canned cat and kitten food. Donated supplies can be dropped off at the shelter or at the Second Chance Thrift Shop (220 E. 3rd Street).
3. Foster a pet. Our shelter is always in need of foster homes to either help with long-term care or more short-term situations, such as immediate medical care, to better socialize certain shy or timid animals, or to provide a more relaxed environment for animals that are stressed out in the shelter.
4. Donate your time. Fostering a special needs dog or cat, even if for a few weeks, is a large commitment to make. Maybe you don't have the time to care for a rescue pet 24/7, but you can still help our shelter by volunteering. There is an immediate need for office help to answer phones and greet customers. Volunteers are always needed to walk the dogs or socialize a cat whenever your schedule permits. What better way to give back to the shelter animals. There are many volunteer opportunities - just contact Lysa Boston, Shelter Manager, to learn how to help the shelter animals.
5. Go through your closets. Old towels, blankets, sheets, and bathmats are all in high demand as they can be used for bedding. We also need your newsprint which is used to line puppy kennels.
6. Donate your dollars. With 2018 coming to an end, consider making a tax-deductible monetary donation. Donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 451205, Grove, OK 74345 or donate safely and securely online via website www.doitforthepets.com. For your convenience and to help our shelter with consistent income, arrange through your financial institution to make monthly recurring payments automatically to Second Chance Pet Rescue.
7. And, of course, don't shop for a pet but adopt instead. Our shelter is crowded with wonderful dogs and cats all looking for a "Home for the Holidays". Make it your holiday wish to save a life and become a pet parent to a homeless dog or cat.
These are just a few suggestions of how to help the animals during this "Season of Giving".
