April 29 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum

I have a confession. I missed two of my very favorite annual events last weekend – the Shangri-La members White-Out Dinner Party and the annual charity performance at Big Shots by the fabulous Old Bulldog Band. I had good reason. I made the trek to Oklahoma City to see the Broadway show Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles. I weighed my options. Beatles? Old Bulldog Band? Beatles? Old Bulldog Band? I never got a chance to see the Beatles in person, but I feel like I have now. I’ve heard The Old Bulldog Band do enough Beatles’ songs over the years…I’m sure they’ll forgive me.

I stayed at a hotel while I was in Oklahoma City. In my room, they had a little refrigerator stocked with $3 soft drinks and $5 candy bars. The coffee and bottled water in my room were offered at no available charge. Apparently the folks in charge of the hotel have not compared prices of those items in grocery stores lately. Coffee and bottled water are the most expensive of all the offerings. Maybe they should charge for water and coffee, but offer free soft drinks and candy bars!

You won’t want to miss a Grand Lake weekend between now and October. The schedule is full of fun. Boat shows, bands, golf festivities, and a load of other special events start this weekend. I hope you’re in party condition – because the Grand Lake party season is officially underway! Burn those socks and let’s get started!

It happened in Detroit. Some drug buyers went to a suspected drug house where they tried to make a buy. As things started to go bad, the “drug dealers” revealed themselves to be undercover cops and a brawl broke out as they tried to arrest the buyers. As it turns out, the “buyers” were also undercover cops. Your tax dollars at work.

There’s some good news for OU football fans who are also dedicated Grand Lakers. Saturday afternoon of Labor Day weekend won’t require a choice between the two. The Sooners’ season-opener against Houston has been moved to Sunday night, September 1. Not only will it not compete with Saturday afternoon holiday boating, it won’t compete with ANY afternoon holiday weekend boating. This should be a new OU, OSU and TU football rule!

DINING AND DRINKING ON GRAND LAKE: Sharky’s at Hammerhead Marina opens for the season Friday night – and the newly expanded Quarterdeck Café at Tera Miranda Harbor opens Saturday morning.

RANDY KREHBIEL’S RANDOM FACTOID OF THE WEEK: The first executive mansion for the president of the United States, leased for $845 a year, stood at the corner of Pearl and Cherry Streets in lower Manhattan, and was occupied by George Washington and his family and household staff for the first 10 months of his presidency. It was demolished in 1856.

BEST FACEBOOK POST OF THE WEEK: The dumbest thing I ever believed as a child was that when I turned 18 my mom wouldn’t be able to tell me what I could and couldn’t do anymore.

*****

BEST SIGN SEEN THIS WEEK: You never appreciate what you’ve got until it’s gone. Toilet paper, for instance.

*****

TWEET OF THE WEEK: Last night my neighbor came home drunk and banged on his own door for like five minutes. Problem is, he lives alone. So, I went outside and told him he wasn’t there, and he left!

*****

OBSERVATION OF THE WEEK: I’m not sure why we needed a study to figure this out, but now there is a study that has been published so…the study revealed that taking selfies and posting them on social media is linked to mental illness, narcissism, and addiction. If you hadn’t already figured that out, now you know.

WHO’S ON TWITTER?  According to the Pew Research Center, Twitter users are largely younger, more educated, and more likely to be Democrats than the overall population. But the gender and racial or ethnic makeup is similar to the rest of the country. Who has the most Twitter followers? Donald Trump? Nope. He’s not even in the Top 100. The Top Ten (in order) are Katy Perry, Barack Obama, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ellen DeGeneres, YouTube, and Justin Timberlake.

Welcome to May in Oklahoma. The weekend weather is the same forecast we’ll probably have for a while. Might rain. Might not. Fifty percent chance of either. Highs in the mid-70s and lows around 60. Looks like it’s worth figuring the meteorologists are 50% wrong. Of course, the weather is always perfect for indoor dining & drinking at Grand Lake.  So, party on! Remember, though… be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me.
