August 26 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum

Grab a tight hold and get a faraway look in your eye, as bull riders always advise. It’s that time of year! The weekend ahead is the annual traffic jam at the intersection of summer vs. school, boating vs. football, home commitments vs. vacation dreams. We’ll take on ALL of those challenges at Grand Lake this weekend – every one of those choices is a part of the line-up at the lake!

*****

I think the calendar confused some folks over the past weekend. Boat traffic on the lake, action at area clubs, and the number of golfers on the golf courses over the past weekend seemed to indicate folks got confused and thought LAST weekend was the Labor Day holiday weekend. In addition to the normal unplanned raft-ups, there were a couple of really fun organized events – the Grove Rotary Club raft-up in Courthouse Hollow and a fun “Proceed to Party” raft-up honoring the late great superstar and Grand Laker Toby Keith.

*****

There are more remembrances of Toby Keith this week. Wednesday evening, watch for lots of Grand Lakers in the NBC/Peacock broadcast at 8:00 p.m. of Toby Keith: American Icon! Lots of Grand Laker were on hand in Nashville a few weeks ago for the filming of that commemorative telecast. Back on Grand Lake, Shangri-La will once again host a “Big Dog Daddy Alternate Shot Horse Race” Sunday afternoon at 4:00 in Toby’s honor – and benefiting the Toby Keith Foundation’s Kids Korral. Gone, but never forgotten.

*****

I know the holiday weekend ahead will mean serious overtime for lots of Grand Lake workers – but the overtime duty for American astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams is getting ridiculous. They arrived at the International Space Station on what was supposed to be a week-long test flight back in early June. Not only are they still stuck there, but new problems have extended their overtime until a Space X vehicle can pick them up….next February! Their one-week mission is now an eight MONTH mission. And you thought YOUR workday was long!

NIL made easy. OSU head football coach Mike Gundy told his players to “tell your agent to stop calling and asking for more money. It’s non-negotiable now.” Well, sort of. OSU has just switched NIL support to a self-checkout system. Players will be sporting QR codes on their helmets this weekend. If you like a play, just scan the QR code and contribute.

I guess we’d better take what we can get. At least we’re #1 in something. A new report says 21.7% of high school kids in Oklahoma vape. That’s double the national average.

*****

I don’t talk much about the Presidential race on here, but if you missed it, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. suspended his Presidential campaign last week. I’m not sure what took him so long to realize he “no longer has a path to victory.” Every member of the Kennedy family has disavowed his campaign and recent polling had him garnering almost two percent of the vote. I guess somebody finally told him, “Here’s your sign.” But, at any rate, there’s a name that won’t be on your November ballot.

RANDY KREHBIEL’S RANDOM FACTOID OF THE WEEK: Almost 100 British colleges and universities play organized American football.

*****

FUN FACT OF THE WEEK: The boat used as the S.S. Minnow in “Gilligan’s Island” was a 1964 Wheeler with a cruising speed of 12 knots, which means they couldn’t have traveled more than 41.5 miles. Honestly, I’m starting to doubt if the show was even real.

*****

ODD FACT OF THE WEEK: Butterflies taste with their feet with special sensors that help them find the right plants to lay their eggs on.

*****

BEST FACEBOOK POST OF THE WEEK: I’m not sure if it’s true or not, but I ran across an old medical school entrance exam. Students were asked to rearrange the letters P-N-E-I-S to form the name of an important human body part which is most useful when erect. Those who answered SPINE are doctors today. The others are on Facebook.

We’re arriving at Labor Day weekend, so of course there’s a chance of showers and thunderstorms off and on – but it’s gonna be a lot cooler! We’ll have high temperatures in the 80s and lows in the mid 60s. In fact, on Labor Day, we’re looking at a high of 80 degrees and a low in the upper 50s! It’s a crazy busy weekend on Grand Lake, of course, so get out there and have some fun! Be patient, be kind, and be generous with your tips – and remember, wherever you decide to party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It might be me!
