August 27 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum

It’s time for a five-day holiday celebration on Grand Lake – so remember, the Official Lake Bum Holiday Rules are in effect this weekend.  No fighting, no puking, no hitting on someone else’s date, no griping at over-worked servers and bartenders, no bragging about how much money you have (or your parents have), no drunk driving, no public nudity (private nudity is okay), no yelling, no discussion of religion - and especially no politics!  As with all summer holiday weekends, you may have a little longer wait for a seat, a drink, or some food. Be nice to everyone who is working so you can play. The population of Grand Lake over the next few days will be equal to the population of the state’s third largest city. If everybody who’s coming to the lake over the weekend  would come every weekend, all the businesses could staff up for giant crowds. So, maybe you should buy a house and a boat while you’re here and come join us for the party all year!

Parents of players are notorious for bad behavior during unsatisfactory ball games, but the same reputation is now attached to a coach’s wife. In Salem, Virginia, Debbie L. McCulley, whose husband is the JV softball coach for Glenvar High School, has been banned from all future Floyd County High School sporting events. The ban is due to an incident area lawyers are calling "moon over Floyd." The charges resulted from Debbie's unusual reaction to her husband's team's loss to Floyd County in May. She "stood on or close to the pitcher's mound and pulled down her pants with her right hand to expose her right butt cheek," according to Floyd County Sheriff's Deputy G.H. Scott. Debbie told the officer that her husband had confronted the opposing coach after the game, and she was afraid he would be "attacked," so she was trying to divert attention from the two men. It worked! Chris Robinson of the Virginia High School League noted that crowd behavior at games is "probably leaning a little bit in the wrong direction." I don’t know. I’m a Grand Laker. It sounded fairly normal to me!

How times change! When I was young, I lived paycheck to paycheck. Now, through hard work and perseverance, I live direct deposit to direct deposit.

No wonder people have such difficulty learning the English language and the proper use and spelling of words. The “to, two, too,” usage and the “their, there, they’re,” and the “your, you’re” are confusing enough to people trying to write our language. This week, though, I found a new spelling rule explanation that should keep everybody thoroughly confused: The rule is “i before e” except when your foreign neighbor, Keith, received eight counterfeit beige sleighs from feisty caffeinated weightlifters. Weird.

A friend of mine told me the other day she noticed that the cover of her ironing board was wrinkled and that she had to laugh at the irony. Then we both cracked up again because of the word “irony.”

The holiday weekend weather looks absolutely perfect – sunshine, light winds, highs around 90 and lows in the mid-70s. It’s great weather for any Grand Lake activity indoors or out!  Be safe, have fun, and stay hydrated. And, remember…wherever you decide to party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me.
