Friday the 13th Weekend in Review

We made it through Friday the 13th unscathed. Now, if we can make it through this Friday unscathed, we’ll be on the way to a good year ahead!

*****

I continue to struggle in my efforts to think of things that are more outrageous than the regular events of the day. I failed again this week when President-Elect Donald Trump introduced a representative of the law firm representing him to make sure he had no conflicts of interest.  The firm, Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, was given a big award last year – Russia Law Firm of the Year. No, really.

The Presidential Inauguration this weekend represents a new start, but it’s not the only one. It’s also the beginning of boat show season – and a new start for the Grand Lake economy. The OKC RV & Boat Show is this weekend; and the countdown has already begun for the big Tulsa Boat Show starting January 30.

*****

When we had the little ice-storm scare last Friday, Governor Fallin said all “non-essential personnel” were excused from work. I can’t help but wonder what people are thinking when they label themselves as “non-essential.” I don’t think I would admit that. At least nobody has to worry about tough decisions like that for the 60-degree weekend ahead!

*****

As we put a final wrap-up on the now-ended college football season, it looks like the sport may be physically even rougher than I thought. The pre-game injury report for the Citrus Bowl included two University of Louisville linebackers – Henry Famurewa and James Hearns – who were both out of competition against LSU because of “gunshot wounds.”

I’m sure you have been worried about Prince William, second in line to the English throne, and his career as a helicopter pilot. If so, you can relax.  He’s giving up his job as a Norfolk-based air ambulance pilot, and moving back to England and into Kensington Palace to assume “full-time royal duties.” I’m not sure exactly what that entails, but it mostly seems to involve waving at crowds and reading the obituary column every day. There’s no career like being a member of the lucky sperm club!

*****

One career is no longer available, by the way. Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus has announced that, after 146 years, the circus will close permanently in May. So…running away to join the circus is no longer an option. #signofthetimes

*****

If you’re looking for a new career, it might be worthwhile to investigate the possibilities of janitorial work at a casino. In Las Vegas, video & slot players failed to cash in almost $12 million of winning tick

ets in a single year. That brought the five-year total to $35 million in uncashed winning tickets in Las Vegas alone!

*****

Speaking of Las Vegas, someone finally thought to install a vending machine that caters to high rollers. In the 23rd floor lobby of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Las Vegas, there is now a vending machine that dispenses champagne. Individual servings of Moet and Chandon bubbly may be purchased from the machine with $20 tokens sold in the hotel lobby.

Here’s something with which Grand Lake boaters & fisherman can identify. The U.S. Freshwater Fishing Association, which has tried for years to have ice fishing recognized as an Olympic sport, is working to legitimize the sport by asking the World Anti-Doping Agency to begin random drug tests of their “athletes.” They did specify, however, that they did not want to test for alcohol because, according to the Chairman of the Association, “everyone would fail.”

*****

There might have also been some alcohol involved in an incident that occurred in Queensland, Australia when “friends” convinced their buddy to let them help remove under-arm hair by setting it on fire. If you’re sick enough to watch some guys who are this sick…yep, it’s on YouTube. (BTW, trying to rub out a fire fueled by alcohol from deodorant spray does not work.)

NFL playoff action moves into the Division Championship rounds this week. By Sunday night, we’ll know which two teams are Super Bowl-bound. This week’s games are Sunday at 2:00 on Fox and 5:30 on CBS.

In the NBA, TNT’s Thursday night double-header features Washington at New York at 7:00 and Minnesota at the L.A. Clippers at 9:30. Friday night, ESPN’s Friday Night Double-Header features Golden State at Houston at 7:00 and Indiana at the L.A. Lakers at 9:30. Saturday night, San Antonio is at Cleveland (7:00 on ABC). Monday night, New York faces Indiana at TNT at7:00 – and the OKC Thunder returns from a five-day rest to face the Jazz in Utah at 8:00 on Fox Sports Oklahoma.

College basketball has some good games this week, too. Saturday, all three Oklahoma teams are on the court, and all three are nationally televised.  Even at that, you might want to find a bar with lots of televisions, because they all play at the same time – and so does Kansas. Tulsa is at South Florida at noon (ESPNEWS) – and Texas is at Kansas (CBS), Iowa State is at OU (ESPN2), and OSU is at Texas Tech (ESPNU), all with 1:00 o’clock tipoffs. Arizona travels to UCLA at 3:00 (CBS) and West Virginia faces Kansas State at 5:00 (ESPN2).

The PGA Tour is in La Quinta, California this week for the CareerBuilder Challenge. Coverage will be on the Golf Channel beginning at 2:00 Thursday-Sunday.

Mother Nature is trying to make up with us for last week’s nippy, wet, slick onslaught. The weekend ahead looks absolutely perfect!  We’ll have sunshine for the most part, with high temperatures in the 60s. Sounds like a perfect weekend to enjoy all Grand Lake has to offer. Wherever you play, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you.  It could be me.
