January 22 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum
The time has arrived, boys and girls. If you’ve been missing your Grand Lake summertime raft-up buddies, you’ll find them all on Grand Lake Reunion Night on the opening night of the Tulsa Boat, Sport & Travel Show Monday, January 29. The Oklahoma City Boat Show was better than usual by most accounts – so Grand Lake dealers are looking forward to a great Tulsa Show and a great year ahead!
*****
While you’re at the Tulsa Boat Show, be sure to thank you Grand Lake dealers for working so hard to provide such a wonderful display of awesome vessels. Take a look around. I think you’ll notice that, if not for the Grand Lake dealers, that wouldn’t be much of a show. To tell the truth, the Oklahoma City show wouldn’t have been worth going to if not for Grand Lake dealers, either. On the other hand, because of such great participation by Grand Lake dealers at the Tulsa Show, it’s the fifth largest show in the country! Enjoy.

I hope all you people are happy who kept whining around that “we need a really hard freeze to kill all the bugs.” Well, you had your damn frigid, miserable weather. Now can we have Spring? By the way, don’t be surprised if I point out to you in May and June that bugs and ticks still exist. As a matter of fact, the Ladybugs were back at work Saturday!
*****
Last week was miserable, no doubt, but Saturday & Sunday weather provided a good example of why more and more people are installing bilge heaters and leaving their boats ready to go in the winter. It was a welcome sign to see boats on the water and golfers on the golf courses over the past weekend. At Shangri-La, I spotted an unusual number of golfers who were carrying their clubs and walking – guys & gals, both. It must be the season to get those bodies back in summertime exhibition condition!

President Trump had kind of a miserable weekend. He celebrated his first full year in office with a government shutdown. It’s the first time in history that government has run out of money with a single political party controlling the White House and both houses of Congress. It’s also the earliest government shutdown in the term of any President in history and the first time there has been a shutdown on the first anniversary of a Presidential inauguration. It looked like there was a compromise early, but White House Chief of Staff John Kelly apparently talked the President into backing out of the deal. As a result, the President missed his big $100,000 per couple celebration dinner at Mar-a-Lago Saturday night. That might be the last time he listens to John Kelly. Nobody loves a party like the President. On the other hand, look at all those records. Perhaps he can turn this into “the greatest, most historic government shutdown ever! That I can tell you.”

Oklahoma State Senator Ron Sharp has filed legislation that would require teachers to take student-teacher relationship training once every semester. He must think they don’t have much retention ability if they have to take the same course every semester with the same “don-t sleep with your students” training. I’m with my buddies at The Lost Ogle. After years of watching the Oklahoma legislature, I don’t think Senator Sharp’s legislation goes far enough. I think it should be expanded to include state legislators – and provide them with detailed training to stop them from having inappropriate relationships with lobbyists, house pages, legislative aides, Uber drivers and 17-year-old male prostitutes. Also, what about church pastors, youth ministers, and bus drivers? It seems like they get into trouble as often as teachers.

I had a great time helping Monkey Islander and former Broadway performer Ron Young celebrate his 100th performance of the National Anthem at Big Shots Sunday. I think he must have a following as loyal as mine. He offered his great inspirational book “The Only Boy Who Danced” for sale at the reception. “Signed copies for only $20,” he proclaimed. “Or, if you want one without my autograph - $25.”

The weekend weather forecast is pretty good for the most part. We’ll have sunshine with a Friday high near 60. Saturday’s high will be in the mid-50s before another cold front sweeps through Saturday night. It’s not a bad one, though. Sunday’s high should be around 40 – and weather for the Tulsa Boat Show next week looks good, as well. The show is a great chance to reunite with your summertime lake friends and share a little fun. When you do, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me.
