July 31 Random Observations Of The Grand Lake Bum

Between a great night listening to Mark Gibson at Doc’s and Erin Fitzgibbon at Big Shots, the big party for Jon Wilson at The Pub Saturday night (not to mention the after-party), and a day trying to cool my temperatures on the water with too many adult beverages, I’m going to have to recuperate a little before another Splash Bash in Ketchum Cove this weekend.

*****

Speaking of Splash Bash - Dang it. I was wrong again! For the second week in a row, I erroneously announced the last on-the-water concert of the season before the Boats, Beats & BBQ two-day bash in Wolf Creek Labor Day weekend. I thought this week’s Splash Bash in Ketchum Cove was it. Nope. Arrowhead’s annual Woodstock on the Water is Saturday, August 12 in Leon Russell Cove (Lawhead Hollow to you outsiders). They’ll start the fun with an overnight raft-up Friday, August 11 – and the Barrett Lewis Band will provide the music Saturday afternoon, August 12. My bad.

The Tulsa Zoo is home to a newborn giraffe. Nothing’s easy for a mama giraffe, by the way. Babies are generally about 6 feet tall and weigh 110 to 150 pounds at birth – and double in size before their first birthday. By way of contrast, a new baby Panda was born at the Oklahoma City Zoo. It weighed in at a whopping quarter pound.

*****

If you’re thinking about changing your name, what do you think about “Subway?” I’m not even making this up. Subway Sandwiches is running a contest that will give the grand prize winner free sandwiches for life in exchange for legally chancing his or her first name to…Subway. Apparently, they’re counting on more than one person to be stupid enough to do this because the rules say “the chain will choose a winner and pay their legal fees to assume a new iconic identity.”

*****

I’m not sure why Elon Musk decided to replace the little blue bird with a big X as the logo for Twitter. Maybe it’s because he finally realized that Twitter is now officially everybody’s “X favorite” social media app.

*****

Speaking of social media, I hope this was at least posted by a millennial…but it certainly takes the cake for the most embarrassingly stupid question I’ve seen posted for a while. The questioner asked, “Is Oppenheimer based on a true story?” Dude, you need to get Google so you don’t look so foolish in front of all your friends. What was it Mark Twain said? “It’s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it an remove all doubt.”

*****

BEST FACEBOOK POST OF THE WEEK: Instead of giving roads the names of leaders and celebrities, we should give them the names of the contractor who built them with his address and phone number. The quality of roads should improve immediately.

BEST SIGN SEEN THIS WEEK: AN ACTUAL SIGN AT A GOLF CLUB IN SCOTLAND: 1) Back straight, knees bent, feet a shoulder width apart; 2) Form a loose grip; 3) Keep your head down; 4) Avoid a quick back swing; 5) Stay out of the water; 6) Try not to hit anyone; 7) If you are taking too long, let others go ahead of you; 8) Don’t stand directly in front of others; 9) Quiet please…while others are preparing; 10) Don’t take extra strokes. Well done. Now, flush the urinal, wash your hands. Go outside and tee off.

That was 30 years ago. Golden Globe-award-winning actress Sandra Bullock is 59.

We’re still sputtering along in the sports world just ahead of a great football season. NFL Preseason action actually starts this week with the New York Jets facing the Cleveland Browns in the Hall of Fame Game Thursday night at 7:00 on NBC.

FIFA Women’s World Cup play continues this week, but because of the time difference between here and Australia, all of the games this week are in the wee hours of the morning.

NASCAR drivers travel to Michigan for Sunday’s Firekeepers Casino 400. Coverage begins at 1:30 Sunday afternoon on USA.

There are a couple of excellent Major League Baseball games, too. The Yankees host Houston Thursday night at 6:00; and the Dodgers are at San Diego for a couple of games – Saturday at 7:30 and Sunday at 6:00.

We’ll have lots of sunshine for the weekend ahead, but it’s gonna be hot again. Highs will be in the mid-90s with lows around 70. It looks like a great weekend for some serious summer fun. Remember, though, wherever you decide to party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me!
