May 14 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum
You’d better hurry up with your tan and building up your party stamina. I can’t believe it’s just a little over a week until the big Memorial Day Weekend on Grand Lake. The time is here, boys and girls…and it looks like warm weather is finally here.

Bullying isn’t just for kids, any more. More and more nursing homes are instituting educational programs to try to put a stop to residents blocking others from dining tables, refusing them the karaoke microphones, and refusing to dance with them. “There’s a clique system, just like everywhere else,” said Betsy Gran, former assistant director at San Francisco’s 30th Street Senior Center. “It’s like ‘Mean Girls,’ except everyone is 80.”

I had flashbacks last week of Oklahoma’s old liquor-by-the-wink system before it was legalized in our state in 1984. Last week was the 100th anniversary of the famous Arnaud’s Restaurant in New Orleans. Arnaud was actually a wine salesman, and he opened the restaurant pretty much on a dare from friends who were certain he couldn’t do it. The great food might have actually kept him out of trouble with the law…or maybe it was something else. During prohibition, “Count” Arnaud never stopped serving alcohol. He was arrested several times, but never imprisoned because, according to legend, many of the judges were very good customers and were enjoying what Count Arnaud was serving in his coffee cups.

I’ll warn you up front, this is pretty disgusting – but it’s just too odd not to mention. Seattle’s serial masturbator is back. Anthony Hardison is accused of violating his probation by whipping it out in front of a female metro bus driver after being banned from boarding a bus driven by a female due to an earlier incident. He’s been arrested many times since 2016 – but none as weird as when he was arrested for masturbating in the lobby of the King County Sheriff’s Office while he was waiting to register as a sex offender. And you thought YOUR friends were weird!

There must have been a full moon or something, because there was another weird incident clear across the country. Police in Daytona Beach responded to a call about a naked man at the airport riding the luggage carousel and screaming, “We’ve got to get out of here,” due to a possible bomb. The airport was cleared, no bomb was found, and the cops found something to cover up John Greenwood and haul him to the pokey…where he will undoubtedly be very popular.

Kansas has a new law. Police officers can’t have sex with people they stop for traffic violations or people they have in custody. Odd as it sounds, Kansas until now has been one of 33 states where consensual sex between police and people in their custody was not a crime.

Just in case nobody has stirred up a hornets’ nest this week, let me get the conversation going. Contrary to what everybody thought, you’re still going to have to get a permit in Oklahoma to carry a gun. Governor Mary Fallin vetoed legislation allowing any non-felon 21 or older to open carry a gun with no permit or training. The legislature might well have overridden her veto…but, since they are no longer in session, that issue is settled. At least for a year.

There’s plenty of fun on the Grand Lake agenda this weekend – both outside and inside. But, remember…wherever you decide to party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me.
