October 16 Random Observations of the Grand Lake Bum
I’m glad we all survived Friday the 13th okay. I didn’t need my special “Eclipse-Watching Glasses” Saturday because Grand Lake out-performed the rest of the eclipse-watching area. Everybody else saw a “ring of fire” as the moon covered most of the sun (except the outer perimeter) for a few minutes. At Grand Lake, we had such heavy cloud cover all day, we had a total eclipse where no one saw the sun at all for the entire day!

I took the opportunity to enjoy Saturday with a bunch of Monkey Island peeps at the Monkey Island Women’s Auxiliary Association big taco bar fundraiser. I must admit to being a little disappointed when I first arrived and tried to order a margarita. I guess the WAAMI ladies had a little different interpretation of a taco “bar” than I did. There wasn’t a bar, but there was an incredible taco feast so impressive that I think the WAAMI gals should take over the cooking at all the restaurants that offer “Taco Tuesday” specials.

Last Saturday night was undoubtedly a big night for the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Not only did they win their football game, but they had a record-breaking number of OU football fans rooting for them while they put a four-touchdown whooping on Lincoln Riley’s USC team. There were more Irish fans in Oklahoma last weekend than there have ever been on a St. Patrick’s Day!

I thought maybe Frank McCorkle liked Starbucks beverages more than anyone else – but maybe he just likes the Grove Rotary Club’s program to provide free books to Delaware County kids. Either way, he was the successful bidder at the Rotary Club’s auction of the very first cup of coffee from the new Starbucks in Grove. You just thought your beverage from Starbucks was expensive! Frank’s cup of coffee was $2,500!

Sadly, sunset at Grand Lake is now arriving before 7:00 p.m. Sadder yet, in three weeks, it will arrive before 6:00. Have I mentioned I hate Standard Time?

It’s getting hard to follow, but the off again-on again-off again October 28 Punkin’ Chunkin’ October 28 at John’s Tractor Works east of Vinita is apparently on again. Stay tuned.

It’s Fall Break week for most of Oklahoma this week. Watch out for little ones illegally driving golf cars and scooters around. Stay safe, my friends.

After a cool and dreary weekend gone by, the upcoming weekend weather looks fantastic! We’ll have sunshine, light winds, highs in the mid-70s and lows around 50. It looks absolutely perfect, so go have some fun! Remember, though, wherever you decide to party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me!
