October 23rd Grand Lake Bum

Halloween is my fourth favorite holiday. You can get by with almost anything if you have a good enough costume. It’s the only time of year that it’s acceptable to put on a mask, walk up to a stranger’s house and demand that they give you food. Halloween builds confidence, too. All those things you never had the nerve to do are suddenly not so dangerous if you’re hiding behind a mask. Depending on the things you do, a mask might not be enough. Maybe a mask and quick feet!

Halloween is only my fourth favorite holiday because New Year’s Eve and St. Patrick’s Day are holidays pretty much devoted exclusively to drinking. Costumes are good – but cocktails are better. So New Year’s Eve and St. Patrick’s Day tie for second place in my list of favorite holidays. So, what’s #1?  Mardi Gras, of course. Drinking AND costumes! The perfect holiday.

We all know you have to have some skill in marketing and/or communications to get your message out to the right audience; but a fellow in Middlesbrough, England went a little too far. He was randomly passing notes out to women in the area. The notes were all the same: “No offense intended. You are just a female that caught my eye…I am looking for a possible private arrangement. If you understand my meaning.” I guess you never know until you ask, right?

The Russian division of Burger King might be stretching things a bit. They filed a complaint with the Russian Anti-Monopoly Service asking that the Stephen King film, “It,” be banned from Russia. The Burger King gurus claimed the clown character “Pennywise” looks too much like Ronald McDonald, and therefore the moving is advertising for McDonalds. So far, the only beneficiaries of the widely publicized complaint seem to be McDonalds and the movie who are getting far more attention than they would have without the Burger King complaint.

Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who’s the richest of us all? According to the just-released Forbes 400 list, Microsoft founder Bill Gates is the richest with a net worth of $89 billion. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is next at $81.5 billion. The top Okie on the list was Continental Resources founder Harold Hamm at 24th ($18.7 billion), followed by BOK Financial Corp. Chairman George Kaiser at 42nd ($10.6 billion), Hobby Lobby founder David Green  at 96th ($5 billion), Tulsa philanthropist Lynn Schusterman at 133rd ($3.9 billion), and Love’s Travel Stop and Country Stores founders Tom & Judy Love at 167th ($3.3 billion).

In Orlando, Florida, Daniel Rushing has settled his lawsuit with the city for $37,500. He was stopped for speeding, but was arrested on methamphetamine charges after police found “crystals” in the floorboard of his car. When the substance was sent off for testing, it turned out to be just what Rushing had said it was – glaze from a Krispy Kreme doughnut. You would think a cop would have recognized that!

We pulled warm temperatures as far into fall as we could, but weather for the upcoming weekend is a lot more seasonally correct, unfortunately. We might have a shower or two Friday, but otherwise the weekend looks sunny. Sadly, high temperatures will only get into the low 50s with nighttime lows in the 30s. I’m ready for spring! Have lots of Halloween fun this weekend. There are lots of parties to enjoy. Be sure and by a drink for the guy next to you, though. It could be me.
