Random Observations From The Grand Lake Bum 5-28-17
I always say don’t pay any attention to the weather forecasters – and I’m right about that more often than they’re right about their forecast. I felt sorry for holiday weekenders who didn’t make it out on the waterSaturday because they believed the forecast about terrible storms with grapefruit sized hail at Grand LakeSaturday at 2:00. No, wait. 3:00. Uh, 4:00. Nope. 7:00. Well, finally at about 10:00 Saturday night, it rained for a while. Sunday, of course, everybody hit the water. If you wondered whether the season was going to be as busy as everybody thought…there’s no need to wonder anymore. People were here. They boated, they partied, they ate, they drank, they danced. And my pals in boat sales and real estate report that a bunch of ‘em were also in the mood to buy boats & houses. It’s gonna be a goodtime year!

And about that forecast of “grapefruit size” hail…whaaat? If there really was such a thing, those flying meteors would smash right through most roofs and kill anybody instantly who got hit by just one piece. Some of my Facebook pals got tickled at all the weather guys & gals trying to scare people more than all their competitors. One of my pals suggested “watermelon size” hail. “Run for your lives.” Be patient. I’m sure the TV meteorologists will get there at some point.

Five of Oklahoma’s six living governors will be at the lake this weekend to be honored at the Home of Hope Admirals Banquet at Shangri-La. How cool is that? Eddy Gibbs and his army of able leaders have brought that Grand Lake landmark back to the forefront of tourism destinations. Thanks, Eddy!

I like ranch dressing as much as the next guy, but I never would have believed it could make it onto everybody’s list of favorites. The Twisted Ranch Restaurant in St. Louis has almost doubled its business this year after revamping its menu to include more than two dozen items made with ranch dressing (including ranch-infused Bloody Marys). As one satisfied customer put it, “Ranch is everyone’s guilty pleasure.”

People are just weird. In Titus County, Texas, a guy – with no reason whatsoever – walked up to a game warden “out of the blue” and asked if he would like to inspect his hunting license. He did. It was fine. The game warden did, however, arrest the guy for possession of a shotgun – his third such arrest, as it turns out, for possession of a firearm after a felony conviction. You can’t fix stupid!

Tori Lee Castillo’s shot at the Mother of the Year title is probably out the window. The 39-year-old Riverdale, Utah woman was greeted by police and a few good Samaritans who had rescued her two kids (age 2 and 5) from the trunk of her car. She had locked them in the trunk so she could go shopping at Wal-Mart without interruptions. People just keep getting nuttier!

I may be smarter than I thought. A new study by a panel of experts on smartness says really smart people tend to go to be late, are messy, and use bad language. I may be brilliant!

While our legislators struggled unsuccessfully to come up with a decent budget and a way to fund it, repercussions are already starting. Shawn Sheehan, Oklahoma’s 2016 Teacher of the Year said “I’m sorry it has come to this,” but he would be silly to stay in Oklahoma when other states pay their teachers so much more. He’s leaving Norman for…Texas, so he will be fairly compensated. Pretty sad. Texas! Sheesh.

We lost another great musician last week. I don’t know which shocked me more – the fact that Gregg Allman died…or the fact that he was 69.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “It makes me sick to my stomach when I hear grown people say that kids have changed. Kids haven’t changed. Kids don’t know anything about anything. We’ve changed as adults. We demand less of our kids. We expect less from our kids. We make their lives easier instead of preparing them for what life is truly all about. We’re the ones that have changed.” – South Carolina Basketball Coach Frank Martin

Our normal Memorial weekend showers appear to be a week late this year. The upcoming weekend forecast calls for a few off & on showers Friday, Saturday & Sunday morning. Of course, that’s just the forecast – and folks who do that work seem to be right only about 40 percent of the time! I’m sure we’ll all find some fun stuff to do, but remember, wherever you decide to play, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me.
