Well, the solar eclipse has come and gone, and all the conspiracy theories fell flat again. Either that, or I have now survived the end of the world eight times! The eclipse didn’t foretell The Rapture, after all. Or if it did, I missed it. Either way, I’ve noticed all my friends are still here.

It only happens once a year. The “Old Bulldog Band” will perform at Big Shots Saturday night as a fundraiser for the 2nd Chance Pet Rescue ($25 per person admission). I love it when these talented musicians show up to stir the memories of great musical days. If you have a nostalgic soul – or if you’re 45+ years old, you will especially enjoy this great performance. Plus…it starts at 7:30, so you’ll be home in plenty of time for your bedtime!

One of Grand Lake’s many unique treasures is Wanda Clark, longtime personal secretary to superstar Lucille Ball. She spent an afternoon at the Coleman Theater Beautiful in Miami Sunday sharing her memorabilia and incredible stories. She’s a very special lady. We’re lucky that she shares her life with us as a Grand Laker!

I’m always envious of people who think up extra creative responses to people who are jerks. I saw a story this week about a woman grocery shopper who peeled all the tangerines in a bag and threw away the peels before checking out. She said, “I just wanted to pay for what I can eat – not the outer covering.” The clever checker never complained – but he cracked all her eggs, threw away the shells, and put the yolks and egg whites in a zip lock bag for her! Gotta love people who get even by using the logic of others against them!

BEST GRAND LAKE EVENTS THIS WEEK: There is certainly no shortage of things to do around the lake this week. Thursday night is the Spring Choir Concert at Grove PAC (7:00 p.m.). The annual Youth Art Show is at the Grove Community Center Thursday-Saturday. Thursday-Sunday, enjoy a great walk through time at the Colonial and Civil War Walk-Through at Har-Ber Village. For golfers, Friday is a PXG Black Ops Fitting Day at Shangri-La Golf Club (3:00-7:00 p.m.) and Saturday is a PING Fitting Day at SLR (9:00-1:00). Saturday is a great “Get Your Groove On” Christian musical show at the Grove City Hall Lawn (11:00 a.m.). Saturday night is a fundraising musical show at Big Shots on Monkey Island featuring The Old Bulldog Band and benefiting 2nd Chance Pet Rescue (7:00 p.m.). By the way, The Anchor at Shangri-La will be closed Saturday evening from 6:00-10:00 p.m. for a Private Event. Sunday afternoon at 2:00, there is an Earth Day Celebration at Bernice State Park with kid-friendly crafts, naturalist activities, giveaways and more. For all our local heroes, Shangri-La hosts a private First Responders “Thank You” Dinner on the Battlefield Patio at Shangri-La Sunday evening (5:00 p.m.). Next Tuesday is “Tuesday Trivia” competition at The Anchor at Shangri-La.

FEEL-OLD MOMENTS OF THE WEEK: Iconic singer/songwriter Carly Simon played her first show as a solo artist when she opened for Cat Stevens at the Troubadour nightclub in Los Angeles – 53 years ago this week. Oklahoma native singer/songwriter/musician Vince Gill turned 67 last week. Do you know musician Julian Lennon? He’s the son of Beatle John Lennon – inspiration for the popular song “Hey, Jude.” Julian Lennon just celebrated his 61st birthday.

BEST WEEKEND LIVE ENTERTAINMENT: There is an incredible line-up of great live entertainment around the lake this weekend. On Monkey Island, Jason Morgan kicks off the weekend with Thursday Night Karaoke at Doc’s Bar & Grill. Friday night, Chloe Johns entertains live at Doc’s. Gavin Tucker will perform Friday night and Wilkie Jay will be live Saturday night at Blind Swine Monkey Island. DJ K-Bandito provides the musical fun Friday night – and Saturday night the great Old Bulldog Band will perform early (7:30) at Big Shots Rhythm & Booze.
On South Grand, Reverse Reaction entertains Saturday night at the Drunken Rooster in Cleora. The Barrett Lewis Duo will be on stage Saturday night at Mooney’s Sunset Bar & Grill in Disney.
In Grove, Bobby DeGonia entertains Friday night at Grand Lake Casinos 655 Venue. There are three nights of live music this week at Cherokee Casino featuring Johnny Dail Roberts Wednesday night, Rusty Meyers Friday night, and Magic J Saturday night.
Wilkie J and Tony T start the weekend Thursday night at Indigo Sky Casino followed by Funkin’ Gonuts Friday and Paralandra Saturday.
At Downstream Casino, there are two shows Friday night. Jefferson Starship performs Saturday night in the Peoria Showplace at Buffalo Run Casino. Voyage will be on stage in The Pavilion at Downstream, while Low Cut Connie entertains in Legends Sports Bar. In Club 60 West at River Bend Casino, The Brad Duvall Band will be on stage Saturday night at 7:00 followed by late night karaoke with DJ Kay beginning at 11:00.

DINING & DRINKING UPDATE: Blind Swine Duck Creek opens for the season Friday (open Friday-Sunday until May – then Tuesday-Sunday). Stuff’ns Café in Ketchum is now open until 8:00 p.m. Friday & Saturday. Mooney’s Sunset Bar & Grill is now open 7 days a week (from 4:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday and noon Friday-Sunday). Ugly’s Grill & Bar at Thunder Bay Marina is now open Saturdays & Sundays for limited hours. They’ll hit their full summer schedule the first week of May. The Quarterdeck Café at Tera Miranda Resort is also open on weekends.

It’s time for the NBA Playoffs! The Play-In Tournament to determine the last playoff teams wraps up Friday with Playoffs officially getting underway Saturday & Sunday.
With The Masters behind us, there are two tournaments this week on the PGA Tour. Some of the players will be in Hilton Head for the RBC Heritage. Coverage begins at 1:00 Thursday & Friday and noon Saturday & Sunday on The Golf Channel. CBS picks up the final two rounds at 2:00 Saturday & Sunday. The rest of the players will head to the Dominican Republic this weekend for the Corales Puntacana Championship. Coverage is exclusively on the Golf Channel.
The UFL professional football season features three Saturday games this week – Memphis vs. St. Louis (11:30 a.m. on ABC), D.C. vs. Birmingham, and Michigan vs. San Antonio (both at 6:00 on Fox). There is only one game Sunday – Arlington vs. Houston (1:00 on FS1).
NASCAR drivers are at Talladega this weekend for the GEICO 500. Coverage is at 2:00 Sunday afternoon on Fox.

After last weekend’s teaser of high temperatures in the mid-80s, we’re back to reality this weekend with high temps in the mid-60s and lows in the mid-40s. If you’re playing outside, just grab a jacket - OR there are plenty of indoor dining, drinking & entertainment options. Remember, though, wherever you decide to party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It might be me!
