How releases work

GRDA balances power generation, flood control, and downstream flow. When heavy rain pushes the lake above normal pool, they release water through the powerhouse first, then open floodgates as needed. Major rain events in the watershed — as far away as southeast Kansas — can drive releases days later.

What boaters should watch for

• Debris. Big releases push logs, docks, and trash out of coves. Slow down and watch the water.
• Current near the dam. Stay clear of the exclusion zone below Pensacola Dam whenever gates are open.
• Water clarity. Expect muddier water for several days after a big release.
• Ramp conditions. Rapidly changing lake levels can leave low-water ramps unusable — check our boat ramp guide.
