June 30 Random Observations of The Grand Lake Bum

Here we are at the biggest week of the year at Grand Lake. This weekend we will have a population equal to the third largest city in Oklahoma! WELCOME! I know we have a lot of folks coming in for the weekend who may not be familiar with my official Grand Lake Bum Holiday Rules of Behavior, so here they are again: No fighting, no puking, no hitting on someone else’s date, no griping at over-worked servers and bartenders, no bragging about how much money you have (or your parents have), no drunk driving, no public nudity (private nudity is okay), no yelling, no discussion of religion - and especially no politics!

As with all holiday weekends, you may have a little longer wait for a seat, a drink, or some food. Be nice to everyone who is working so you can play. Everyone is always understaffed for the influx of holiday weekend visitors. If everybody who’s coming to the lake over the holiday weekend would come every weekend, all the businesses could staff up for those giant crowds. If I get my drink before you do, it’s because I’m there every day all year long. Bartenders already know what I want – and they know I’ll be sitting on the same stool in December. So, maybe you should buy a house and a boat while you’re here and come join us for the party all year!

With all the narrow, winding roads around the lake, there are special driving rules at Grand Lake, as well: 1) Use your turn signals (those are controlled in most vehicles by a little handle on the left side of your steering wheel – push up if you’re turning right, push down if you’re turning left; 2) If there is no one in front of you, but a line of cars behind you, YOU are the problem.

Congratulations to all the high school kids from all across the country (and as far away as Africa) who competed in the World Championship High School Fishing Tournament last week. With the fishermen, their captains, and their families, we had more than 3,000 visitors in that one group. The kids were all outgoing, polite – and a joy to be around. Let’s hope our tourism experts are successful in making Grand Lake a permanent home for that great tournament.

Last Saturday’s “Grand Jam” music concert on the water in Duck Creek was delayed by more unwanted rain – but only for an hour. The skies cleared just in time for another fun afternoon of music on the water. Great show! Great fun!

A couple of Grand Lake promoters won some big honors last week. The RedBud Awards are given out annually as the highest honor in the state awarded by the Oklahoma Travel Industry Association – and Grand Lake had TWO big winners. The Shangri-La Marketing Department took top honors for the “Best Brochure or Publication” and the Grove Convention & Tourism Bureau was awarded the RedBud for “Tourism Organization of the Year.” The presentation of the award to Grove was pretty funny. Convention & Tourism wizards Brent Malone and Jeff Lovelady were busy at the lake with the High School World Championship Fishing Tournament. Grove City Manager Darren Cook was at the awards ceremony to accept the award – and in their absence, he hopped onto the stage with two giant life-size cutouts of Brent & Jeff. Well done, Darren! It was the highlight of the Oklahoma Tourism Conference – and damn creative, I must say!

We finally get a little reprieve from the never-ending rain this week, just in time for the holiday. We’ll see sunshine this weekend with high temperatures around 90 and lows in the low-to-mid-70s. There’s an incredible line-up of really cool things happening around the lake this weekend in addition to all the fireworks shows everywhere you look; so get out and enjoy the wonder of a holiday on Grand! Remember, though, wherever you party, be sure to buy a drink for the guy next to you. It could be me!
