While Oklahoma winters can move the temperatures up and down the thermometer from one day to the next, many people find that using space heaters is a quick, convenient way to hold off the chill when necessary. However, space heaters, when not used properly, can pose both a fire and electric shock hazard.

Safety should always be a priority if you are planning to use a space heater. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when selecting and using a space heater in your home:

• Make sure the heater you are using is properly labeled, showing that is has been listed with a recognized testing laboratory.

• Before use, familiarize yourself with all operating instructions and warning labels provided by the manufacturer.

• Also, before using, inspect the heater. Are the cord and plugs in good shape? If anything is frayed, worn or damaged, do not use the heater.

• Never leave a space heater unattended. Turn it off when you leave the room or are going to sleep. Keep pets and children well clear of the heater as well.

• Also, always keep the space heater at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including papers, clothing, and rugs.

• Do not place the heater in a high traffic area where they may pose a tripping hazard.

• Never plug space heaters into an extension cord. Plug them directly into the wall outlet and do not plug any other electric device into the same outlet as the heater.

• Place space heaters on level, flat surfaces. Never place heaters on cabinets, tables, furniture, or carpet, which can overheat and start a fire.

• Always unplug and safely store the heater when it is not in use.
